The Marine Institute - Where You Want to Be
You want more than an education. You want an education that works.
Make it happen at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University.
This is the place where education will get you the real edge you need to work in industries with maximum potential and maximum rewards.
That’s just one reason to choose to study at the Marine Institute. Here are few more....
A Chance to Experience your Education
At MI, most of our programs include work terms that give you hands-on experience and help you to build your resume and career.
You’ll also take part in technical sessions and projects where you put all that theory you’ve learned to work.
Perhaps you’ll be designing “greener” engines, learning how to use technology to reduce marine piracy or stepping into one of our thirteen marine simulators that will put your training to the test.
Learning from People who’ve been there...
Our instructors are industry professionals, experts in their field because they’ve been where want to go in your career.
You’ll also chat with MI graduates who offer return to the classroom to share their experiences with students like you.
We’re small
…and we like it that way. When you study at MI, you are not lost in the crowd. With an average class size of 24 students, our instructors can get to know you and become your mentors.
We are research-oriented
Being part of a university gives MI the opportunity to dive deep into oceans sector research. The research conducted at MI allows us to advance our programming to reflect the real world as it changes.
Our graduates get ahead
Our graduates have a reputation for being leaders in their field. And it’s no wonder. They are in demand around the world. MI has close to 100% graduate job placement in many programs – second only to Memorial University’s medical school - and many students secure their jobs within 3 months of graduation.
Unlimited Program and Career Opportunities
The Marine Institute offer more than 20 industry-driven programs to get you where you want to be. From certificate programs to master’s degrees, we have something for everyone.
Meaningful work experiences
Our Placement Office has an unmatched knowledge of the marine, food and oceans industries and can find you the right employer for you.
You’ll attend work term orientation sessions to ensure you are well prepared for local, national and international placements.
From hosting on-campus employer interviews and career fairs to helping you write your best resume, we can help you secure excellent work term experience that will jump-start your career.
Money Matters
The Marine Institute offers one of the lowest tuition fees in the country. In fact, our tuition fees for our Diploma of Technology programs are the lowest in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Because Money STILL matters…
We reward students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership and creativity. Not once, but twice a year!
In 2009, we handed out over $87,000 in scholarships and awards.
As a first year student, you could receive a Marine Institute entrance scholarship valued at $1000 or Memorial University entrance scholarship valued between $1000 to $3500.
Sometimes you just need to forget you’re brilliant…
So unwind and enjoy a variety of intramural sport activities in our well-equipped recreational facilities and at Memorial’s Field House. Or get involved in our student union, Memorial clubs and societies or meet your friends at a MI social.
We have some of the world’s largest and best training and research facilities
Where else could you find the world’s largest flume tank, a full motion, full mission ship bridge simulator (only one of two in the world), an aquaculture facility and a fully licensed food pilot plant all under one roof? Did we also mention we have Canada’s largest marine library?
One great city
St. John’s is an ideal location in which to live, work, play and study. It offers a small town feel with a flourishing recreational, cultural and entertainment scene.
