Our Programs
Nautical Science

Feel the pull of the tide, or crave a life on the high seas?

If so, this is the program for you. Our Nautical Science diploma program prepares you to qualify for Transport Canada's Watchkeeping Mate certificate of competency allowing you to sail anywhere in the world as an officer on a wide variety of vessels. You also get a head start on higher level certificates of competency because of credits you receive towards Transport Canada examinations and sea service exemptions. As a cadet, you'll train on a wide range of ships, from large passenger cruise ships to cargo vessels. In the classroom, you are exposed to science, technology and tradition as you learn to manage and safely navigate a vessel while caring for the cargo you're carrying and protecting the marine environment in which you operate. Currently, there is a high demand for ships’ officers around the globe. You can travel worldwide while living at home.

Program Structure

This four-year program, consists of six academic terms, three technical sessions and two sea phase work terms. This cadet program alternates semesters on-campus with semesters at sea.

First year: Two academic terms plus one nautical science course, an eight-week technical session followed by a two-month sea phase.
Second year: Two academic terms followed by a six-week technical session and a 15-month sea phase.
Third year: Two academic terms followed by an eight-week technical session.

What You'll Need

You must meet the Marine Institute's Application and Admission Regulations either immediately upon graduation from high school, following a period of employment subsequent to graduation, or by transfer from another post-secondary institution.

Transport Canada requires proof of satisfactory physical fitness, including visual acuity, colour vision, and hearing among other physical requirements, prior to sitting for Transport Canada exams. Proof of physical fitness must be provided by way of signed Seafarer’s and MED medicals from an approved physician for registration in this program. Contact the Registrar's Office for a list of physicians approved to conduct the Seafarer's or MED medicals.

Student Experience

The quality of education at MI is on par with anywhere in the world, if not better. The education I received has certainly influenced where I am today, thanks to an agreement between MI and Royal Carribbean International to take deck cadets in Alaska. Currently, I am a Captain with Marine Atlantic.
