If you fit this description, you are well suited for a career as a fire fighter or emergency response specialist. You will gain hands-on experience in high angle rescue, first aid, hazardous incident identification and response, vehicle extrication, and confined space rescue. You’ll be trained in the field and at our state-of-the-art facilities under real-life conditions. Equip yourself with the knowledge and skills you need to fulfill your destiny.
Program Structure
This is a two semester Program, plus an eight week work term, delivered at the Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre in Stephenville, NL. The courses are taught by full-time, certified faculty and part-time Fire Service personnel.
This program starts you at the most basic level and progressively advances you through all requirements of the Level I and II National Fire Protection Association's Professional Standard.
Physical fitness is required for employment as a fire fighter; therefore successful completion of the SERT fitness test is a prerequisite to work term commencement.
Students in this program train at our Safety and Emergency Response Training (SERT) Centre in Stephenville, NL. From its fire training field, said to be one of the best in Canada for air crash training, to its aviation firefighting simulator, crash response vehicle and ample classroom space, the SERT Centre is custom-designed to bring a new level of accredited firefighting training throughout Atlantic Canada. Other facilties include a rope rescue tower, a confined space training faciltiy and a large array of firefighting and emergency response vehicles and equipment.
What You'll Need
You must have completed, as a minimum, graduation from high school. Submit a certificate of conduct from your local police force, and possess a Class 5 Driver's License with an Air Brake Endorsement (Class 9 or equivalent). Proof of medical fitness must be provided by way of a signed MI Medical from an approved physician prior to registration in this program. Contact the Registrar's Office for a list of physicians approved to conduct the Marine Institute Medical.
Prior to the start of the work term, students must pass a fitness test based on industry standards.
