Living Expenses

Learning to budget for all of your living expenses is important as you prepare for your life at MI.

Supplies

Be sure to consider such things as

  • books and supplies. We suggest approximately $500 per semester or $1000 per year for books.
  • health and dental plans
  • laboratory fees
  • student union fees
  • recreation fees

Transportation

If you have your own vehicle, MI provides on-campus parking if you have a parking permit.

The city also offers several choices of taxi services or you may to ride the Metrobus which offers service throughout St. John's and the neighbouring city of Mount Pearl . Metrobus offers student semester pass to full time Marine Institute students.  MI is conveniently located on several Metrobus routes.

Food

If you choose to live in Paton College, you'll be surprised by the selection and quality that you find at Memorial University's dining hall. This is not your high school cafeteria. It has a lively atmosphere, classic design and an ever changing, fresh menu that will cater to any craving.  Meal Plans are available to those who live on campus.

Of course, you can also grab a hot meal or snack in the Marine Institute's cafeteria and enjoy our spectacular view of St. John's.

So how can you help pay for your education? Memorial and the Marine Institute has award-winning programs aimed at giving students work opportunities.

  • Our career experience program (MUCEP) offers about 2,000 on-campus jobs.
